Lesson 11: Designing a Controlled Water Test
Planning and data collection sheet
Grade 9 MYP Design | From USB to Field System
| Name: __________________ | Class / team: __________________ | Date: __________________ |
| Today’s goals • Write a testable question. • Control sample volume, probe depth, time, and cleaning. • Collect repeated measurements. |
Key vocabulary
| Term | Working definition |
| independent variable | |
| dependent variable | |
| controlled variable | |
| repeat | |

1. Research question and prediction
Research question:
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Prediction and scientific reason:
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Variables
| Variable type | What it is in our test | How it will be measured or controlled |
| Independent | ||
| Dependent: temperature | ||
| Dependent: conductivity | ||
| Dependent: turbidity | ||
| Controlled variables |
3. Repeatable procedure
Label sample cup and data file.
Use the same sample volume.
Rinse the appropriate probes with clean water.
Place probes at the same depth and position.
Wait the same settling time.
Record the same number of readings at the same interval.
Remove probes, rinse, and prepare the next sample.
Add or revise steps to match your exact test:
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
4. Data record
| Sample | Trial | Mean temp °C | Mean EC mS/cm | Mean turbidity raw | Notes |
| A | 1 | ||||
| A | 2 | ||||
| A | 3 | ||||
| B | 1 | ||||
| B | 2 | ||||
| B | 3 | ||||
| C | 1 | ||||
| C | 2 | ||||
| C | 3 |
5. Quality check
☐ Sample labels match file names.
☐ Probe depth was consistent.
☐ Waiting time was consistent.
☐ Probes were rinsed between samples.
☐ Unexpected events were recorded rather than hidden.
6. Sources of error
Identify at least three sources of error and how you reduced them.
