Lesson 12: Reliability, Accuracy, and Calibration
Data analysis and claim-evidence-reasoning
Grade 9 MYP Design | From USB to Field System
| Name: __________________ | Class / team: __________________ | Date: __________________ |
| Today’s goals • Distinguish precision and accuracy. • Calculate mean and range. • Identify noise, drift, and outliers. • State cautious conclusions. |
Key vocabulary
| Term | Working definition |
| precision | |
| accuracy | |
| repeatability | |
| calibration | |
| noise | |
| drift | |
| outlier | |
| mean | |
| range | |
| limitation |
1. Precision or accuracy?
| Scenario | Precise? | Accurate? | Reason |
| Readings cluster tightly but are all far from the reference | |||
| Readings are spread out around the reference | |||
| Readings cluster tightly around the reference | |||
| No reference value is available |
2. Calculate
Use one set of repeated readings from your test.
| Reading 1 | Reading 2 | Reading 3 | Reading 4 | Reading 5 | Mean | Range |
Mean = sum of readings ÷ number of readings. Range = maximum − minimum.
3. Graph audit
☐ Time or sample is on the x-axis.
☐ Sensor value and unit are on the y-axis.
☐ Title states what is being compared.
☐ Legend is included if more than one series is shown.
☐ Caption states test conditions and calibration status.
4. Outlier decision
Identify one unusual reading. Is it an outlier? What evidence or rule supports your decision? Do not delete it without explanation.
