Work through the lesson

1. Think about your audience

Your audience is the people your design is for. Would you show the same things about yourself to your grandparents, your best friend, and a future employer? For this poster, your audience is other Grade 6 students.

2. Make an identity inventory

In Word or PowerPoint, list at least three things in each group: things you like; things you are good at; things that matter to you; places connected to you; words that describe you; and colours, images or symbols that feel like you. You will choose from this list rather than put everything on your poster.

3. Choose your message

Choose three words you want the finished poster to communicate. Complete “I want other Grade 6 students to think: this person is …” Then list the three most important things your poster should show.

4. Investigate two identity posters

Find two effective personal identity or about-me posters. For each, record what you notice first, what it tells you about the person, the colours and fonts, and whether it is easy to read. Identify one idea you could learn from and one thing you would change.

5. Write “My poster must…” requirements

Write requirements for a clear name, your three identity words, a limit on main colours, one clear focal point, readability from about two metres away, a chosen minimum number of meaningful images or symbols, and suitability for other Grade 6 students. Choose the colour limit and image count for your plan. Add one requirement of your own.

6. Explain your next decision

Finish these sentences: “The most important thing my poster should communicate is … because …” and “One design choice I already know I want to make is …” Use these decisions when you develop your layout ideas.
