Website V2: clean it up

Make your website consistent, remove unnecessary elements and use a five-second test to guide a revision.

For this lesson

3 pages · Use the handout for the complete instructions, examples and response spaces.

Your task today

Make your existing website consistent and clear

Work on Website V2. For the first 30 minutes, improve the existing design without adding features. Keep a copy of your previous version.

Go to the steps ↓
  1. 01

    Find three problems

In the handout, identify one inconsistency, one confusing thing and one unnecessary thing. Name the section or page where each appears.

  2. 02

    Set five design rules

Choose rules for the background, main colours, headings, buttons/cards and navigation. Use the same rule wherever an element does the same job.

  3. 03

    Direct the changes

Give AI your existing site and the five rules. Ask it to apply them consistently, keep your content and avoid redesigning from scratch. Check the result and request a specific correction where the first attempt is weak.

  4. 04

    Remove three distractions

Delete three unnecessary things and explain why. Preserve useful content and working navigation. Check colour, headings, component styles, image sizes and spacing.

  5. 05

    Run the five-second test

Show Home for five seconds, then hide it. Ask: What was the website about? What did you notice first? What do you remember? What do you think this person is like? Where would you click next? Record your partner’s words.

  6. 06

    Make an evidence-based change

Use the test to choose one improvement. Explain the evidence and the change. Check the links and useful interaction again, then save PersonalWebsite_V2 with all linked files.

Complete the handout as you work

Completed Website V2 handout and the matching PersonalWebsite_V2 files, including the images, styles and scripts they need. Upload them together in the specific assignment.

The handout records your decisions. A finished-looking product by itself does not show that reasoning.
