Work through the lesson

1. Return to your three brand words

Look at your mood board and the three words you chose for your personal brand. Your visual choices should help communicate those words.

2. Write your design brief

Explain who the brand is for, its target audience, the three qualities it should communicate, and where it will appear. Your brand will be applied to a logo, business card and letterhead. Finish by describing how it should feel.

3. Write the logo specification

Your logo should be recognizable, work in colour and black and white, stay readable when small, use no more than three main colours, match your identity words, suit your audience, and work on a business card and letterhead. You make the final logo yourself. Add one requirement of your own.

4. Understand the logo types

A wordmark uses a name as the logo. A lettermark uses initials or letters. A symbol or icon communicates through an image. A combination mark puts a symbol together with words or letters.

5. Develop three different directions

Make one concept using your initials, one using a symbol connected to your identity, and one combining your name or initials with a symbol. Sketch on paper or use PowerPoint shapes. For each, explain its meaning, which identity word it communicates best, and why it might work. Recolouring the same idea does not create a different concept.

6. Use AI to widen your ideas

Ask AI to describe 15 possible logo concepts for your three brand words without making the final logo. Choose one interesting suggestion, reject one generic suggestion, and explain both decisions.

7. Get a partner critique

Show all three concepts. Ask which is most memorable, which best matches your identity words, which is most original, and what question the partner has. Listen before responding.

8. Choose a direction to develop

Complete “Right now, I think Direction … is strongest because …” This is a direction for further development, not a finished logo.

Keep this evidence

  • Personal brand design brief
  • Logo specification
  • Three distinct logo concepts with explanations
  • AI idea you accepted and idea you rejected, with reasons
  • Partner feedback and a justified direction

FROM MOOD BOARD TO LOGO IDEAS

GRADE 7 DESIGN • PERSONAL BRAND • CLASS 3

Today you will turn your brand direction into a design brief, a specification, and THREE genuinely different logo concepts.

KEY IDEA: A logo is not “whatever looks cool.” Every visual choice should support the identity you want your audience to understand.
AMY DESIGN BRIEFWho? + For whom? + What should it communicate? + Where will it be used?
I am designing a personal brand for… ______________________________________________________________________
My target audience is… ______________________________________________________________________
I want the brand to communicate…3 words ______________________________________________________________________
The brand will be used on…logo / business card / letterhead ______________________________________________________________________
It should feel… rather than… ______________________________________________________________________
BMY LOGO SPECIFICATIONThese are the rules your logo should meet.
✓Be easy to recognize.
✓Work in color AND black-and-white.
✓Still be clear when small.
✓Use no more than 3 main colors.
✓Match my three identity words.
✓Be suitable for my target audience.
✓Work on a business card and letterhead.
✓Be designed by me — AI may suggest ideas, but not make my final logo.
One extra requirement of my own: ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________
CLOGO ANATOMYFour common ways a logo can work.
WORDMARK The name itself is the logo. Example: GoogleLETTERMARK Initials or letters. Example: IBM
SYMBOL / ICON A picture or symbol can stand alone. Example: AppleCOMBINATION Words + symbol together. Example: Adidas
DTHREE DIFFERENT LOGO DIRECTIONSDo not make three versions of the same idea.
Your three concepts should differ in STRUCTURE, not just color. Aim for: initials / symbol / combination.
DIRECTION 1 — INITIALS Use your initials as the main idea. SKETCH HERE What idea does it represent? ____________________________________________ Which identity word fits best? ____________________________________________ Why might it work? ____________________________________________
DIRECTION 2 — SYMBOL Use a symbol connected to your identity. SKETCH HERE What idea does it represent? ____________________________________________ Which identity word fits best? ____________________________________________ Why might it work? ____________________________________________
DIRECTION 3 — COMBINATION Combine name/initials with a symbol. SKETCH HERE What idea does it represent? ____________________________________________ Which identity word fits best? ____________________________________________ Why might it work? ____________________________________________
EAI: BAD IDEAS CAN BE USEFULUse AI to expand the possibilities — not to make the final logo.
Suggested prompt: “Give me 15 possible logo concepts for a personal brand that should feel [word 1], [word 2], and [word 3]. Describe the ideas only. Do not generate the logo.”
